AGEISM IS REAL

I was pushed aside because of my age.
What surprised me most was how many others were too—quietly, and often alone.

This blog is a place for shared stories, hard truths, and practical tools for anyone facing age bias at work or in life.

Welcome to Ageism is Real.

A Note on Why This Blog Is Back

September 14, 2025

This site went quiet for a while—not because the issue faded, but because my perspective changed. Time gave me distance from the initial experience, and with that came a clearer, steadier voice.

I’m returning to Ageism Is Real with a focus on refinement rather than reaction. The core questions remain the same, but the work now aims for clarity, context, and usefulness—grounded in lived experience and informed reflection.

Over time, the content here will continue to evolve to reflect that shift. My hope is to offer something thoughtful, credible, and practical for anyone trying to understand how age bias actually operates—and what to do when it appears

together, we can DISRUPT AGEISM & AGE Discrimination

Ageism Is Real examines how age bias shows up—in hiring decisions, workplaces, healthcare, and the everyday assumptions that quietly determine who is taken seriously.

Here, we look closely at the difference between ageism and age discrimination, the stereotypes that sustain both, and the ways experience is too often misread as obsolescence. These are not abstract ideas. They play out in real lives, with real consequences.

This site exists to help people recognize age bias when it appears—and to respond with clarity, perspective, and information. Whether you’re still working, navigating an unexpected pivot, or simply paying closer attention, understanding how ageism operates is the first step toward addressing it.

You’ll find personal stories, thoughtful analysis, and practical resources intended to inform, support, and connect. Ageism Is Real is not about grievance. It’s about visibility, dignity, and agency.

New content is added regularly. If you have a story to share, a resource worth amplifying, or a perspective that adds depth to the conversation, you’re welcome here. This work is stronger when it’s shared.

Age bias thrives in silence.
Visibility is how it begins to lose its power.

THE INVISIBLE WOMAN

Dedication: As I began writing this article a few days ago, my focus (as always!) was on ageism.  Yet, having people vanish from view, can be due to a variety of reasons, not just ageism. Reflecting on my own journey,  I came to a harsh realization. I allowed a dear friend to my younger self to nearly disappear. There are myriad of reasons, but none worth remaining only a memory in each other’s lives. While I can’t be responsible for her, I must own letting her slip from my consciousness.  I resolved to reconnect, and to do so with far more regularity, not just when she reaches out to me in crisis. I can be a better friend, a better human.   After speaking with her today, I think we both understood that friendships are not always easy to maintain. They can require hard work. Commitment. So this post is dedicated to my sister from another mother, SLG. , Introduction   Imagine this scenario. Once, you were the center of attention

How My Dog Helps Me Recover From Ageism, Depression and Job Loss

When Work Ends, Identity Often Ends Too Introduction: After thirty-seven years of work, I lost my career.  What followed was not simply unemployment. It was as if the scaffolding of my existence had been suddenly kicked out from under me—my identity, purpose, daily rhythm, financial stability, and the future I had spent decades working toward were all gone in an instant. The hostile workplace that preceded my layoff had already left bruises on my spirit. By the time my career ended, I was lost in waves of major depressive disorder, anxiety, and insomnia, barely recognizing the person I had become. For many people who experience age discrimination, the hardest part is not losing the job. It is mourning the person you thought you were—the self that once felt secure, valuable, and seen.  I had spent decades building a career, raising a family, and doing everything I believed was expected of me. Suddenly, I found myself asking questions I had never had to ask before: Who am I now? What purpose do

A BLOGGER EMERGES FROM WORKPLACE AGE DISCRIMINATION

My Story: Part 1 of 3. This blog emerged from the ashes of a career I was not prepared to walk away from. I started this blog after my unexpected departure from a long and fulfilling career, which brought to light the undeniable existence of ageism and age discrimination in the workplace. My goal is to provide conversations, tools and resources to those who may suddenly find their beloved careers unraveling due to ageism.

WORKPLACE AGE DISCRIMINATION. HOW IT UNFOLDED FOR ME

My Story: Part 3 of 3 Workplace age discrimination can be subtle.  Hard to recognize. But trust me, it is very much alive. It’s taken six months to write this article. Hopefully dear reader, this personal example of age discrimination in the workplace is conveyed void of the emotional baggage I have carried. In early 2022, I was interviewing for other management positions, seeking a salary increase that had eluded me. During that time, I had a one-on-one meeting with Karen, my new Assistant Vice President. Karen was warm and easy to talk to, making me feel heard and safe. That feeling of safety led me to bring up my concerns about ageism within our parent organization. I tried to convey it wasn’t just about one incident or one team. Ageism seemed to be more widespread. (Please see article linked below referencing a specific incident). Karen listened attentively and showed genuine concern. To my delight, Karen offered me a promotion on one of her other teams. She emphasized my value

IS THIS AGEIST? HOW WOULD YOU REACT?

My Story: Part 2 of 3 Over the past twenty years, my career has been an incredible journey, filled with challenges and rewards. Looking back, I realize how deeply immersed I was in work that I truly loved, alongside colleagues whom I greatly valued.  However, unbeknownst to me, the inevitable storm brewed within senior leadership, ready to deliver its turmoil. It all began in 2019 with a promotion that required relocating from Northern California to Southern California. After multiple rounds of interviews, I was offered the job. The promotion came with the added benefit of the company covering our home sale and relocation expenses, leaving me feeling immensely fortunate. At the time, I couldn’t help but think how lucky I was to still be valued at my age. However, it wasn’t until later that I realized I had dodged a bullet. None of the interviews took place in person or via video calls. It was like one of those dating shows where people don’t meet face-to-face until they’re already involved.

JOB SEARCH? TIPS TO FIGHT AGEISM IN THE WORKPLACE

The hidden cost of a toxic work environment Introduction:  After being laid off, I have been looking for work in a comparable role for nearly a year.  It has been quite disheartening.  Ageism is a problem in today’s workplace, where those of us over fifty often struggle to find good jobs. Although older workers have tremendous experience and skills, we can face unconscious biases that make it harder for us to land the jobs we strive for. As we age, so does our experience and skillset. However, when it comes to looking for a job as an older worker, ageism can often become a barrier in the hiring process. It is no secret that age discrimination exists in the workforce, and older workers may face challenges such as being perceived as overqualified or too expensive to hire. But, with the right approach and some tweaks to your resume, you can overcome these obstacles and find a fulfilling job. I offer the following information and tips, which have been compiled from
